This summer, fans will flock to theaters to see Superman, Freakier Friday, and Jurassic World Rebirth. But many of those blockbusters will also be available to stream at home. Which is the better viewing experience? Some movie fans say there’s no substitute for seeing a film on a big screen with an audience, snacks from the concessions stand, and state-of-the-art sound. Are Movies Better in the Theater?
Yes
The experience of watching a movie is not just about the film. It’s about everything that comes with it: the amazing sound, the reclining chairs, the popcorn, and the fun of being with my friends. We always buy a large bucket of popcorn with extra butter and a bag of M&M’s to pour on top. No microwavable popcorn comes close to movie popcorn. I also love watching trailers and making a list of upcoming movies I can’t wait to see. Your home is comfy and convenient, but nothing compares to watching a movie like Jurassic Park on a massive screen with surround sound. The dinosaurs’ roars and stomps are so loud, you can feel your seat vibrate. You can’t get that experience at home.

Movies are better at home. One reason is the price tag. Once you add up the cost of tickets, popcorn, candy, and drinks, watching a movie in the theater can get very expensive very quickly. Instead of going to the theater with your friends and each paying $20 for a ticket, you can invite friends over and pay a $20 flat fee to rent the same new release. Older movies are even cheaper or free on streaming services. Plus, at home you can eat whatever snacks you want. You can also pause the movie to go to the bathroom, ask questions, or talk about what you think so far. And if you don’t like the movie you chose, you can just stop it halfway through and watch something else!
