Welcome back to school! What are your dreams for the year? Making the basketball team? Getting cast in the musical? Meeting new friends? Whatever your goal, a great way to work toward it is with visualization. Studies have shown visualizing yourself doing something activates the same parts of your brain you use when you actually perform the action. It can also help you feel calmer and more focused. Here’s how to do it:
1. Find a quiet space and close your eyes.
2. Pick an image that represents your goal. For example, if you want to make the basketball team, you could visualize yourself shooting a free throw.
3. Focus on the image, concentrating on details. For the basketball example, you might imagine the smell of the gym, the feeling of the ball in your hands, and the sound of the crowd in the stands.
4. Try to repeat this visualization for at least a few minutes on a daily basis. And don’t forget to practice your free throws!
